Business English - Small Talk

Got any hobbies?

Showing an interest in someone’s hobbies is a good way to get them talking, and it helps you learn more about them and the things they like. But this is not just a conversation starter; it’s also a common question in job interviews, so it’s a good idea to have some basic vocabulary about your hobby and be able to describe what you like about it.

Be descriptive

In a job interview, a question about hobbies is an invitation to show some of your personality and list some things you like to do outside of work. When making small talk, you’ll want to be a bit more specific: Don’t just say “I like to knit,” say something like “I like to knit while I listen to audiobooks. I just started trying to knit a hat, but I’ve never made a hat before, so I’m not sure how it will turn out. Knitting around in a circle is different from going back and forth in lines, like I’m used to.” If you don’t provide any details, you don’t give the other person anything to respond to. Of course, you should wait for them to show additional interest before you launch into a 5-minute speech about types of yarn!
